5 Indoor Sports to Try in Minneapolis
Stay active no matter the season by trying these indoor sports in Minneapolis! Picture pickleball in a cidery and pick-up soccer at a coffee shop (yes, seriously). Or maybe indoor ice rinks and virtual golf suites are more your style. No matter your age or skill level, try your hand at some of Minneapolis' most popular indoor sports to keep your body engaged and mind happy.
1. Pickleball
If you’ve hopped on the pickleball craze or are wondering what all the hype is about, head to Northeast Minneapolis to try your hand at this paddle sport.
Lucky Shots Pickleball Club has 12 indoor pickleball courts with cushioned surfaces. It’s favored by the local pickleball pros, but newbies are frequenters here, too. Sign up for a beginner class to learn the rules and techniques of the sport. If you’ve already got the hang of things, sign up for open play to drop in and play with a variety of partners with skills like yours. Or gather a group of friends and book a court! Rental rates vary depending on the time of day you go, and paddles are available for rent, too.
Not far is Minneapolis Cider Company. Known for its locally crafted cider, Minneapolis Cider Co has four pickleball courts inside its warehouse-style taproom. Rent paddles for $3 a day, and courts for $40 per hour. After you’ve worked up a sweat, meander to the taproom to enjoy creative orchard blends with flavors like lavender, mango and habanero or their THC seltzers.
2. Ice Skating
Skating on a frozen lake is a uniquely Minnesotan experience. But sometimes the temps are either too cold or too warm for a safe lake skate. In that case, head to the Parade Ice Garden just west of downtown for open indoor skating. Rent skates for just $3, and tickets to get on the ice are $4 for adults and youth, $3 for seniors and free for kids under 5.
3. Rock Climbing & Bouldering
Another indoor sport popular among Minneapolis locals? Climbing. It engages the whole body and the mind. Climbing is incredibly social, too. You shouldn’t climb alone for safety, and it’s a great opportunity for encouragement and chatting in between turns. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself because you’ll make mistakes. The feeling of getting the hang of things and completing a climb is unbeatable!
The Minneapolis Bouldering Project in Near North is bright, welcoming and home to a vibrant community of climbers. Bouldering gyms don’t have any ropes — the walls are meant to mimic caves and slanted rocks to climb you’d find in nature. Purchase a day pass for $20 to do some open climbing with your friends or sign up for a two-hour session to learn the basics of bouldering. You’ll need special shoes to climb, so rent a pair at the front desk before you get started. When you’re done, head to Pryes Brewing down the road with your crew to unwind.
For a more traditional rock-climbing experience with harnesses and ropes, go to Vertical Endeavors in south Minneapolis. Take advantage of the auto belay system. You’ll be able to climb without a partner, or you and a friend can climb at the same time without having to switch turns handling each other’s ropes. Vertical Endeavors has walls for first-time climbers, advanced climbers and everyone in between. A day pass is $22, and gear rentals are packaged for $13.
4. Pick-Up Soccer
Spend time playing pick-up soccer at Ninth Street Soccer and Coffee in Northeast Minneapolis (Yes, you read that right – this place is also a coffee shop!). Pick-up soccer is hosted daily, and kid’s open play is hosted twice a week. Five v. five pick-up games are co-ed, open to all skill levels and are $7.50 an hour. There are also women's soccer sessions Monday evenings. If you want a pick-me up before you play, the coffee shop’s menu is filled with specialty coffee, smoothies, and snacks. Watch the action on the field while you caffeinate.
5. Virtual Golf & Mini Golf
Minneapolis golf courses may be covered in snow, but that doesn’t mean you can’t hit the links — virtual and mini golf is waiting for you. In the North Loop, head to THR3 Jack Indoor Golf. It’s known for hand-crafted cocktails, a food lovers’ menu and six simulators which feature over 70 world-famous courses allowing you to "golf" in places you never thought possible. Tom’s Watch Bar downtown has three TopGolf suites with a variety of games to test your hole-in-one skills, your chip shot and your long drive. Each simulator is $25 per hour. TopGolf Swing Suites can also be found at the Marquette and Graduate Hotels. Both have comfortable, private golf experiences for practicing your swing year-round.
Ok, mini golf isn’t the sportiest of indoor sports, but it’ll get you walking around, smiling and maybe even jumping for joy if you put a hole in one. New to Minneapolis is Puttery, a 21+ only spot with three intricately designed putting courses and three bars with their own unique cocktail creations and upscale apps. For $25 you’ll be able to play unlimited rounds of mini golf.
Located in an old soup can factory, Can Can Wonderland is home to a wildly popular immersive, arts-driven 18-hole mini golf course. The fantasy course was designed from more than 200 ideas about what a dream mini-golf course would look like, so it’s filled with quirks and lots of fun. Start at the State Fair hole and play through the Squirrel Scrambler, climb Music Mountain to get to your Gramma’s Living Room at hole 15 all the way to the Golden Throne. Admission is $13 and each round of golf is $13 as well. Pregame or postgame with a pint from their pour-your-own tap wall and unlimited rounds of vintage pinball or arcade games.
