What’s New in Minneapolis: Summer Heat Edition

Minneapolis (July 29, 2019) – The four seasons of Minneapolis are all beautiful in their own way and summer in the City by Nature is a time to get out and explore in between festivals, boating and Twins ballgames. - First ‘Hemp and Hops’ Beer in Minnesota
Finnegan’s Brew Company started producing “Kicked to the Herb” Pale Ale in the Downtown East neighborhood, the first beer to be brewed with hemp oil in Minnesota. Produced with Citra and Chinook hops, the beer features “tropical and piney” flavors. https://finnegans.org/
- Minneapolis Cider Co. Open
Located in a former manufacturing plant in southeast Minneapolis that retains some of its original features, including a 10-ton crane, the newest cidery in the city uses juice from a Minnesota orchard. minneapoliscider.co
- Dive Into the River Garden
Northeast Minneapolis dive bar Tony Jaros River Garden is the latest area watering hole to have a chef take-over to provide hungry guests high-quality eats. Smack Shack founder Josh Thoma and chef Nick O’Leary call their new, separate kitchen spot within the bar the Burger Dive. With more than 14,000 square feet, this brand-new food and beverage collective near Target Field promises a diverse range of culinary offerings in one spot including chicken and waffles, churros, a mega quesadilla, ramen, poke bowls and scones. South Minneapolis’ new Jinx Tea keeps teas kegged and on tap, alongside cocktail-inspired tea drinks, brewed-to-order hot drinks, boba (bubble tea), carbonated tea and kombucha. www.jinxtea.com/

- Moxy Minneapolis Downtown
Like all the Moxy hotels, the welcoming “urban cabin vibe” lobby is a communal space where you get a complimentary cocktail or mocktail upon check-in and neighbors are invited to hang out with guests. Nostalgic games like shuffle board, foosball and air hockey keep things fun on the patio and monthly events with DJs, local bands and weekend yoga are just another reason to spend time there while keeping young at heart. - Anda Spa at Hotel Ivy
From a Swedish word meaning “spirit,” Anda reflects the philosophy of the $2.5 million, 17,000 square foot renovated spa at Hotel Ivy, a luxury hotel in downtown Minneapolis. The wellness retreat opens Aug. 1 and was designed around crystal-based healing practices with renowned Crystal Energy Practitioner Colleen McCann serving as an advisor. www.andaspa.com/

- ‘Walk on Water’ at Peavey Plaza
Built in 1975 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013, Peavey Plaza was designed by landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg and has been considered an icon of modernist architecture. Restored fountains and water features include a raised basin where a quarter-inch of water makes it look like you’re walking on water. The Tony Award-winning Guthrie Theater commissioned a new play by the two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage in 2014. The wait is now over as “Floyd’s” opens Aug. 2. The comedy centers around former prisoners re-entering the workplace and runs through Aug. 31. Nottage’s play, “Sweat” will play at the theater in summer 2020. www.guthrietheater.org - 56th Uptown Art Fair
A brand-new Uptown Art Fair Marketplace that features locally produced goods for sale is featured at the nationally recognized, juried art festival Aug. 2-4. Three concurrent exhibitions open Aug. 12 to celebrate the national center for fiber art’s 25th anniversary through Oct. 26. www.textilecentermn.org - Mill City Museum Exhibit Tells Stories of African-American Architects
A new exhibit created by the African American Interpretive Center of Minnesota (AAICM) will explore the stories of several African-American architects whose work helped form the Twin Cities we know today. “The Builders: Shaping Minnesota’s Architectural Landscape on the Color Line” will feature maps and blueprints of the architects’ creations and offer insight into the lives of black Minnesotans in the 19th and 20th centuries beginning Aug. 8 through Oct. 27. www.mnhs.org/millcity/activities/exhibits
