What’s New in Minneapolis’ Black Restaurant Scene
For Immediate Release
Minneapolis (July 29, 2024) – The Minneapolis food scene continues to punch above its weight in all ways, but perhaps nowhere as much as the Black-owned dining scene, with numerous new spots opening in the past year and a deep menu of classics yet to be explored. National Black Business Month in August is a perfect time to learn more about and support these tasty and thriving Black businesses:
- Dario, featuring a dozen handmade pastas made fresh daily in a dedicated pasta room, opened recently in the North Loop neighborhood with Instagrammable décor in tropical colors and a Christian Bale in “American Psycho” portrait you have to see. Beverage Director Stephen Rowe was a founding member at world-renowned, award-winning Marvel Bar in the North Loop.
- Parcelle Organics in Northeast Minneapolis is all organic, uses no seed oils and their nutritious foods are free of all pesticides and herbicides, thanks to chef Kamal Mohamed, who also owns nearby Stepchld.
- Ava, the North Loop’s newest hotspot for cocktails and culinary delights is serving shareable “American tapas,” from a prolific and busy chef Mohamed (who also owns Nashville Coop Chicken).
- The Camden Social in North Minneapolis is a neighborhood social destination opened in fall 2023 by Brittany and Gerard Klass of Soul Bowl and Kathryn and Alfonso Mayfield of Allure Cigars that offers top-shelf cocktails, great food and cigars.
- Klassics Kitchen + Cocktails and C.R.E.A.M. Café, also by the proprietors of Soul Bowl, this Mill District restaurant offers everything from shaken teas and Barista-brewed coffee drinks and flights to a wide variety of breakfast, lunch and dinner options daily, and a weekly Sunday brunch.
- The Bazemnt Lounge recently opened on Washington Avenue highlighting evening music events with reserved tables at this Mill District upscale club.
- SunBean Coffee opened steps from Minnehaha Falls Regional Park as a place to experience and support community, and they give back 3% of profits to support accessible and affordable mental healthcare.
- Pimento Jamaican Kitchen opened a new Minneapolis location last fall, bringing the tropical charm of Jamaica to the new Bde Maka Ska park pavilion. Pimento on the Lake is joined by their Pimento Market, featuring unique artisanal goods, handcrafted jewelry and mouthwatering treats from more than 20 BIPOC businesses.
- Cobble Social House has been crafting cocktails and exceptional sushi in an intimate setting in the North Loop since 2019.
- Breakfast Bar of Minnesota, located in the Warehouse District, is a family-owned all-day breakfast joint with a Southern-inspired comfort food menu featuring chicken & waffles, jerk shrimp & grits, collard greens and even lobster tail and lobster mac. Owner Marcus Williams, a local who used to play NFL football, also offers hookah and cigars on the enclosed patio.
- 2 Dope Chicks café serves everything from breakfast classics to savory lunch options with a Southern flair “with the utmost convenience” from the lower level of the Hennepin County Government Center downtown.
