The Frog Bride Starts the New Year At the Children's Theatre
Minneapolis, MN – Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) will present the Twin Cities debut of The Frog Bride by David Gonzalez. Gonzalez is an award-winning storyteller, poet, musician, theatre artist, and public speaker whose work has toured nationally and internationally. In this modern take on a classic Russian folktale, Gonzalez weaves masterful storytelling with world-class musicianship in a music-infused, multimedia experience. Gonzalez is accompanied on stage by musicians performing “Five Melodies for Violin and Piano” by the 20th century Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev with additional jazz-funk music by Daniel Kelly. Video projections by New York-based video artist Matyas Kelemen incorporate paintings by the Russian artist Vassily Kandinsky from the Guggenheim Museum collection.
The Frog Bride makes its Twin Cities debut after acclaimed performances at The New Victory Theater, The Kennedy Center, and across the country. The production was also nominated for a 2006 Drama Desk Award for “Unique Theatrical Experience.” CTC Artistic Director, Peter Brosius cited Minnesota’s vibrant storytelling culture as the impetus for introducing Gonzalez to our stage. Brosius states, “We are excited to introduce the Twin Cities’ audience to the storytelling magic of David Gonzalez. His inventive and musical dramatization of this art form is wholly unique and we can’t wait for everyone to experience it.”
When a king sends his three sons to find their brides, two return with fair ladies but the youngest returns with…A FROG?! The Frog Bride has everything you need for a rousing tale – a royal ball, a curse, a broken heart, and the search for true love – performed with an energetic and skillful twist.
At the heart of The Frog Bride is a tale of growing up. Gonzalez states, “This is a story of the fantastic journey a youth must take to become an adult. There are trials and tests that confront Ivon’s perception of the world; that embarrass, confuse, or confront his current sense of consciousness. Ultimately, he discovers not only the world, but also the world within him.”
The Frog Bride runs January 12 – February 28, 2016 on the Cargill Stage. Recommended for grades 3+. For more information, visit childrenstheatre.org or call the Ticket Office at 612.874.0400. Proudly sponsored by Land O’Lakes, Travelers, and Arts Midwest.
