MINNEAPOLIS, MN, October, 2015 ─A special selection of renowned artist Kelly Marshall's hand woven décor and accessories will be featured and available for purchase from November 2 - December 26 at the Textile Center 2015 Holiday Gallery Shop
Kelly Marshall is recognized for combining rep weave's rich texture and linear structure into extraordinary textiles inspired by the aesthetics of the Arts & Crafts movement, contemporary design, and traditional Scandinavian weaving.
"We are delighted to feature the hand-woven work of long-time Textile Center Shop artist Kelly Marshall this year. It is the perfect way to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Weaver's Guild of Minnesota, located at Textile Center," said Nancy Gross, Director of Administration. "Kelly's artwork is an expression of color and pattern created through the timeless craft of weaving. The Scandinavian rep weave technique she uses results in gorgeous functional art pieces including rugs, throws, pillows, table runners and tote bags that coordinate with any interior style."
The Holiday Gallery Shop triples the Shop's footprint, expanding to fill the Joan Mondale Gallery with even more fabulous one-of-a-kind fiber art, just in time for gift giving. The Shop features exquisite handmade fiber art, from luscious wearables of every hue to home décor and gifts, along with books, professional art supplies and tools, fibercraft kits, and other unique finds. Lila Nelson was an adventurous Minnesota farm girl who left the land to attend college, join the U.S. Air Force, and then forge a national reputation as a scholar and artist of traditional Norwegian textiles.
She and her late husband Marion Nelson are credited with transforming Vesterheim into the premier ethnic museum that it is today. In the mid-1960s, they were hired to catalog the collection of art, pottery, furniture, and other artifacts at the museum, then affiliated with Luther College. When Vesterheim became an independent nonprofit in 1965, Lila became the museum's Textile Curator and Marion Nelson the museum's Executive Director.
Lila, who passed away on May 26, 2015, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at age 93, was an exceptional woman who was active in the Weavers Guild of Minnesota for decades, taught classes and led tours to Norway, and created an impressive body of weaving.
