Minneapolis, March 13, 2012The Walker Art Centers Target Free Thursday Nights in April feature the second event in the Sound Horizon music series, in-gallery performances by multi-instrumentalist Elliot Sharp (Thursday April 5, at 6, 7, and 8 pm) and artists Krzysztof Wodiczko and John Rajchman in conversation as a part of the symposium Discourse and Discord: Architecture of Agonism from the Kitchen Table to the City Street (Thursday April 12, 7 pm). Other special free events in April include a sampling event with Chef-in-Residence Justin Frederick (Thursday April 5, 59 pm) and a free screening of the film Grand Canyon directed by Lawrence Kasdan (Thursday, April 12, 7:30 pm). The Walker Art Center Teen Arts Council (WACTAC) takes over the building for an evening of subversion and rule-breaking inspired by the exhibition Absentee Landlord and its curator, camp icon John Waters, in A Night of Bad Art at the Walker Art Center (Thursday, April 19, 59 pm). Samplings with Chef-in-Residence Justin Frederick

Gather by DAmico, 59 pm

Gather by DAmico will feature Justin Frederick of DAmico Kitchen as its guest chef on Thursday, April 5. Frederick is the latest addition to the unique chef-driven sampler series at Gather featuring prominent local chefs. Guests can sample his complimentary menu items with the two featured items being offered for sale on subsequent Thursday evenings throughout April. (Reservations highly recommended.) On the first Thursday of each month, a new featured guest chef serves complimentary samples and is on site to answer questions and meet guests. Gather features a happy hour and full bar with an innovative specialty cocktail menu every Thursday evening.

At age 19, Frederick started cooking after his first taste of confit and has been with DAmico and Partners since 1998. He spent several years cooking contemporary Mexican cuisine at MASA, Gathers sister restaurant on Nicollet Mall, and prior to that Giorgios, Café Lurcat, Trygs and Grand Café.

Sound Horizon: Elliott Sharp

Whether he plays jazz, rock or free improvisation, Elliott Sharps guitar can rip flesh, thanks to his astounding fretwork skills and an inventive musical vocabulary. JazzTimes

Equal parts multi-instrumentalist, extended guitar hero, and mad scientist, Elliott Sharp has been a pivotal experimenter in the downtown New York music scene for more than 30 years. This sure-to-be jaw-dropping performance of acrobatic dexterity and visceral composition will feature his Octal for eight-string guitar/bass.

Exploring the interstitial spaces of live sound and visual art, the in-gallery music series Sound Horizon continues this spring with three of the countrys most respected composers and solo sonic adventurers. Free performances take place within the Perlman Gallery, which features the exhibition Dance Works II: Merce Cunningham/Ernesto Neto. Presented in association with American Composers Forum.

In Dialogue: Krzysztof Wodiczko and John Rajchman

Join a conversation on art, design, and agonistic democracy with artist Krzysztof Wodiczko and philosopher-theorist John Rajchman. This lecture kicks off the symposium Discourse and Discord: Architecture of Agonism from the Kitchen Table to the City Street (April 12-14) and will be webcast live and archived on the Walker Channel (channel.walkerart.org).

Gallery Talk: David Lefkowitz

David Lefkowitzs paintings of obsolete fixtures and electrical outlets are dispersed throughout the exhibition Lifelike, which explores an array of approaches that artists take in reproducing common objects in painstaking detail. Join the Minneapolis-based artist as he discusses the role of humor, the uncanny, and realism in the exhibition and his own work.

Talk-It Hennepin: Creative Urban InterventionsA Dialogue with Candy Chang

Minneapolis Hennepin Avenue has evolved over a couple of centuries from an American Indian trail to an iconic, essentialand often contestedurban thoroughfare. Two of its modern-day major landmarksthe Walker and the Minneapolis Sculpture Gardenhave long held a crucial interest in this place. The Walker is partnering with Hennepin Theatre Trust, Artspace, the City of Minneapolis, and the public in a yearlong Plan-It Hennepin initiative to shape the avenues two-mile downtown segment as a lively corridor for arts and culture.

This spring, the Talk-It Hennepin series of free events around Minneapolis brings Hennepin Avenue stakeholders together with todays foremost thinkers and professionals in city planning and design. Topics will cover everything from Hennepins history and creative urban design strategies to arts-driven development, creative economies, and cultural districts around the world.

On April 26, join artist, designer, and urban planner Candy Chang at the Walker. Cofounder of the New Orleansbased studio Civic Center, Chang is dedicated to making cities more comfortable for people. Many of her projects combine street art with urban planning and social activism, sparking conversations among strangers in public places and providing people with easy and innovative ways to have a voice.

With Before I Die, she transformed an abandoned house in New Orleans into an interactive wall for residents to share their dreams; The Atlantic called it one of the most creative community projects ever. She created fill-in-the-blank I Wish This Was stickers for people to express what they want in vacant storefronts. Shes worked with communities in other metropolises around the worldincluding New York; Johannesburg, South Africa; Turku, Finland; Nairobi, Kenya; Vancouver, Canada; Querétaro, Mexico; Almaty, Kazakhstanto address a range of issues from tree planting to street vendors rights.

Chang is a TED Senior Fellow, an Urban Innovation Fellow, and was named a Live Your Best Life Local Hero by Oprah Magazine. This lecture is a Plan-It Hennepin event, copresented by the Walker, Forecast Public Art, and Hennepin Theatre Trust.
