‘Sufiana - The Sufi Ecstasy’ premieres at The Cowles Center Sept. 16-18
The Cowles Center to present Sufiana - The Sufi Ecstasy featuring Katha Dance Theatre, as part of their 2016-2017 season. Featuring Live Music composed by 2016 McKnight Fellow Dr. Pooja Goswami and choreography by KDT’s Founder/Artistic Director Rita Mustaphi, Sufiana - The Sufi Ecstasy is truly an uplifting experience, completely unique and ecstatically alive!
Sufi music, movement and dance are all integral parts of Sufism and it finds a voice even today. Sufism is an ennobling idea which believes in complete devotion to the Divine and an absolute love for mankind. And the concert is an experience in divine ecstasy, from pure silence, when life begins traveling through the vibrations of love and submission and returning once again to an everlasting silence.
This program could not have been better timed. At a point when many issues are viewed through the myopic vision of religious connotations and fundamentalism, the message of the Sufi saints could sound the sane tone amidst the malignant din. Sufiana – the Sufi Ecstasy is a joyful celebration with rhythmic dancing, whirling, music and poetry and of universal oneness. It promotes peace and unity through acceptance and tolerance.
Joined by esteemed musicians, Dr. Pooja Goswami (composer/vocaistl), Dr. Allaghata Pavan (Tabla drums); Greg Harriges (Guitar), Vinod Krishnan (Keyboard), Pankaj Mishra (Sarengi) and Abhinav Sharma (Percussion), Sufiana - The Sufi Ecstasy also features KDT Company dancers: Sarika Haris, Priyanka Jain, Rupa Nair, Nivedita Sahni, Mukta Sathe, Anurag Sharma, Monica Singh, Asha Sharma and Rita Mustaphi.
Tickets to Sufiana - The Sufi Ecstasy are $21-$26; discounts are available. Tickets can be purchased online at boxoffice@thecowlescenter.org, or by calling the Ticket Office at 612.206.3600. Please see The Cowles Center’s website for summer business hours.

About Kathak Dance
Kathak dance is the classical dance tradition of Northern India. This elegant, spontaneous dance has its origins in the narrative tradition of the village minstrel, enriched over the centuries through exposure with Indo-Persian cultures. Kathak dance combines lyrical grace, subtle expressions and meaningful hand gestures with physically demanding pirouettes and intricate footwork.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund; by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Target Foundation, by the McKnight Foundation and by the generosity of Katha Dance Theatre’s private donors.
