2014 ALL-STAR GAME ROSTERS ANNOUNCED
Six Oakland Athletics Named to Midsummer Classic for First Time Since 1975; N.L.-Leading Milwaukee Brewers Send Four All-Stars for First Time Since 2007;Rookies Abreu, Tanaka Among 26 First-Time All-Stars, 24 Foreign-Born All-Stars
Pitchers and reserves have been named to the American League and National League All-Star Teams, as announced today by Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association and All-Star Game managers John Farrell of the A.L. and Mike Matheny of the N.L.. The 2014 A.L. and N.L. All-Star rosters were unveiled earlier this evening during the Taco Bell All-Star Selection Show on ESPN.
In addition to the starters who were elected by the fans, pitchers and reserve players were named to the All-Star Game rosters by the Player Ballot a vote of the players, managers and coaches and by the All-Star Game managers in conjunction with MLB. In making their selections, the managers have ensured that each of the 30 Major League Clubs will be represented in the All-Star Game.
American League position players who are invited to the 85th Midsummer Classic as a result of Player Balloting are catcher Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals, who will replace injured fan-elected starter Matt Wieters of the Baltimore Orioles in the starting lineup; first baseman Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox; second baseman Jose Altuve of the Houston Astros; shortstop Alexei Ramirez of the White Sox; third baseman Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers; outfielders Michael Brantley of the Cleveland Indians, Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland Athletics and Alex Gordon of the Royals; and designated hitter Victor Martinez of the Detroit Tigers.
A.L. pitchers who have made the All-Star Game as a result of the Player Ballot include starters Masahiro Tanaka of the New York Yankees; Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners; Mark Buehrle of the Toronto Blue Jays; Scott Kazmir of the Athletics; and Yu Darvish of the Rangers. The relievers who are All-Stars via the Player Ballot are Greg Holland of the Royals; Sean Doolittle of the Athletics; and Dellin Betances of the Yankees.
Farrell had seven selections to fill out the remainder of the A.L. roster. The four pitchers chosen by the manager, in conjunction with MLB, are David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays; Max Scherzer of the Tigers; Glen Perkins of the host Minnesota Twins; and Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox. The three position players who are among Farrells selections are Derek Norris and Brandon Moss of the Athletics; and Edwin Encarnacion of the Blue Jays. In addition, catcher Kurt Suzuki of the Twins has been appointed by Farrell to take the place of the injured Wieters on the A.L. All-Star roster.
The 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote Sponsored by Experian will determine the 34th A.L. roster spot. The competitors are Astros starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel (A1); Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Corey Kluber (A2); Tigers starting pitcher Rick Porcello (A3); Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starting pitcher Garrett Richards (A4); and White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale (A5).
National League position players who are invited to the 85th All-Star Game as a result of Player Balloting are catcher Jonathan Lucroy of the Milwaukee Brewers; first baseman Freddie Freeman of the Atlanta Braves; second baseman Dee Gordon of the Los Angeles Dodgers; shortstop Starlin Castro of the Chicago Cubs; third baseman Todd Frazier of the Cincinnati Reds; and outfielders Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins, Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies and Hunter Pence of the San Francisco Giants.
N.L. pitchers who have made the 2014 All-Star Game as a result of the Player Ballot include starters Johnny Cueto of the Reds; Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals; Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers; Madison Bumgarner of the Giants; and Jeff Samardzija, who was traded from the Cubs to the Athletics this weekend. Though Samardzija has been traded to an A.L. Club, he will be considered a member of the N.L. squad and will receive full All-Star honors in Minnesota, but will be inactive for the All-Star Game. Per Mathenys selection, Samardzija will be replaced by Julio Teheran of the Braves. The relievers who are All-Stars via the Player Ballot are Craig Kimbrel of the Braves; Francisco Rodriguez of the Brewers; and Aroldis Chapman of the Reds.
Mathenys nine selections, in conjunction with MLB, included five pitchers: starter Zack Greinke of the Dodgers; starter Tyson Ross of the San Diego Padres; starter Jordan Zimmermann of the Washington Nationals; reliever Pat Neshek of the Cardinals; and reliever Tony Watson of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The four position players who are among Mathenys selections are catcher Devin Mesoraco of the Reds; infielders Daniel Murphy of the New York Mets and Matt Carpenter of the Cardinals; and Pirates infielder/outfielder Josh Harrison, who is the first utility player named to the N.L. All-Star squad since Atlantas Omar Infante in 2010.
The 2014 All-Star Game MLB.com Final Vote Sponsored by Experian will determine the 34th N.L. roster spot, a competition that will feature third baseman Casey McGehee (N1) of the Marlins; first baseman Justin Morneau (N2) of the Rockies; third baseman Anthony Rendon (N3) of the Nationals; first baseman Anthony Rizzo (N4) of the Cubs; and outfielder Justin Upton (N5) of the Braves.
The Athletics, who entered play on Sunday with the best record in the Majors (54-33), will send six players to the Midsummer Classic for the first time since 1975, when seven Oakland players were selected to the A.L. All-Star Team. Four N.L. teams, including the N.L.-leading Brewers, Cardinals, Dodgers and Reds, will send an N.L.-high four players to the All-Star Game. It marks the fourth time in the last five seasons (except 2013) that the N.L. has had at least four different teams with at least four All-Star selections.
White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu and Yankees rookie right-hander Masahiro Tanaka headline the group of 24 foreign-born All-Stars, as well as the 26 All-Stars who will be making their Midsummer Classic debut. The 24 foreign-born players include nine players from the Dominican Republic, six from Venezuela, five from Cuba, two from Japan, one from Colombia and one from Puerto Rico. Abreu becomes the first White Sox rookie selected to an All-Star Game since outfielder Ron Kittle in 1983. Tanaka and his Yankees teammate Dellin Betances are the first rookie hurlers to earn an All-Star nod for the Yankees since right-hander Spec Shea in 1947.
Managers plans are in place to replace any starting pitchers who elect not to participate in the All-Star Game after pitching on Sunday, July 13th. Any pitcher replaced on the active All-Star roster will be recognized as an All-Star and invited to Minnesota with full All-Star honors.
