The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts Presents Broadway Songbook: The First 100 years of Broadway
Show appears on Ordway stage before embarking on first Braodway Songbook tour
ST. PAUL, Minn. (July 9, 2014) The Ordway Center for the Performing Arts is pleased to announce its popular Broadway Songbook series will return to the Ordway stage Aug. 7-10 with Broadway Songbook: The First 100 Years of Broadway. Tickets are $37 and can be purchased online at www.ordway.org, by phone at 651-224-4222 or in person at the Ordway ticket office.
This limited-run, cabaret-style show celebrates the history of American musical theater by taking a journey through the first 100 years of Broadway. Broadway Songbook: The First 100 Years of Broadway includes classics from the early years to the Golden Age, including songs from such popular shows as Annie Get Your Gun, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Fiddler on the Roof, The Music Man, Show Boat, Oklahoma!, Guys and Dolls, Gypsy and more.
The Broadway Songbook series was created as a way to share the joy and importance of American musical theater with the community, said James A. Rocco, Ordways vice president of programming and producing artistic director. Over the past three seasons weve focused on the works of many different writers and composers. I thought it was time we take a step back and give an overview of how those musicals got started.
In addition to appearing on the Ordway stage, Broadway Songbook: The First 100 Years of Broadway will also go on a five-city tour throughout greater Minn. The tour will make stops in Austin, Red Wing, Dawson, Detroit Lakes and St. Cloud throughout the fall. This is the first time that a Broadway Songbook series has gone on tour.
The Ordway has produced shows in the past that have gone on to tour nationally and internationally, but never within the state. We saw this tour as a way to broaden our community outreach efforts and continue the Ordways mission of sharing the arts with everyone, added Rocco.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
