MINNEAPOLISNickel Creek, the Grammy Award-winning bluegrass-and-beyond trio of maverick mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile with the brother and sister team of violinist Sara Watkins and guitarist Sean Watkins, with all three on vocals, have reunited for the first time since 2007 for a tour celebrating the bands 25th anniversary. Coinciding with the release of a new album, the tour of the multi-platinum selling group, produced by Outback Concerts, begins in Nashville on April 18 and stops at the State Theatre in downtown Minneapolis at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, 2014 for a concert presented by Hennepin Theatre Trust. Secret Sisters will open. Visit HennepinTheatreTrust.org for tickets and more information.
Formed in 1989 when Chris Thile and Sara Watkins were eight years old and Sean Watkins was eleven, Nickel Creek earned a loyal following playing the festival circuit for nearly a decade. The bands self-titled debut album was released in 2000 to commercial and critical acclaim: it sold nearly one million copies. Nickel Creek released two more records: 2002s This Side, which won a Best Contemporary Folk Album Grammy, and 2005s Why Should the Fire Die. This is Nickel Creeks first tour since an indefinite hiatus, and the announcement was heralded by the advance release of Destination, a song from the upcoming album.
The Nickel Creek individuals have been anything but inactive since 2007, consistently exploring their own solo work as well as pursuing ongoing collaborations. Among other recordings, Chris Thile has released three albums and an EP with his band Punch Brothers. Sara Watkins, a frequent guest on A Prairie Home Companion, and her brother Sean have for years held an informal residency called the Watkins Family Hour at the L.A. club Largo. Nonesuch released Sara Watkins in 2009 and in the three years between it and her second record, Sun Midnight Sun, she toured the world as a solo artist and as guest fiddle player/vocalist with the Decemberists. Sean Watkins formed the acoustic folk/pop band Fiction Family, co-writing as well as co-producing two records, Fiction Family (2009) and Reunion (2013). He also assembled the eight-member Americana super-group WPA. In early 2014, Watkins will release All I Do Is Lie, his first solo record in eight years.
