SAINT PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota Wild General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed defenseman Jared Spurgeon to a seven-year, $53,025,000 million contract extension ($7,575,000 million average annual value) that goes through the 2026-27 season.
Spurgeon, 29 (11/29/89), set career highs in goals (14), assists (29), points (43) and games played (82) during the 2018-19 season. The 5-foot-9, 166-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta also set career highs in shots on goal (152) and hits (91) and tied his career high with 20 penalty minutes (PIM) last season. He led the team in blocked shots (145), ranked second in TOI/game at 24:09 (17th in the NHL) and fifth in goals, assists, points, shots on goal and hits. His 14 goals ranked T-3rd in franchise history by a defenseman in a season.
Since the start of the 2015-16 season, Spurgeon ranks T-14th amongst NHL defensemen in PPG (13), 17th in blocked shots (569), T-17th in goals (44) and 20th in TOI/game (23:49). He has tallied 248 points (70-178=248) in 591 career NHL games during nine seasons with Minnesota (2010-19) and owns 17 points (6-11=17) in 44 career Stanley Cup Playoff contests. Spurgeon is the franchise leader amongst defensemen in goals and blocked shots, ranks T-1st in GWG (13), second in games played, points, assists, PPG and shots on goal and third in hits. He also ranks fourth in franchise history with a plus-51 rating (second amongst team defensemen). His 96 PIM since the start of the 2010-11 season are the fewest in the NHL amongst active defensemen that have played in at least 500 games.
Minnesota signed Spurgeon as a free agent on Sept. 23, 2010. He made his NHL debut on Nov. 29, 2010 at Calgary. The New York Islanders selected Spurgeon in the sixth round (156th overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
