Minnesota Dance Theatre Presents
A Compelling Weekend of Repertory Performances
Spotlighting a Modern Masterpiece, World Premiere and Historic Gems
Minneapolis, MN (March 3, 2015) Minnesota Dance Theatre (MDT) presents a dynamic weekend of repertory performances Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12 at The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, featuring José Limóns modern masterpiece The Moors Pavane, the world premiere of Point of Reference by MDT Artistic Director Lise Houlton, and a collection of significant excerpts by MDT Founder Loyce Houlton.
Considered one of the most poetic works in the modern dance canon, José Limóns The Moors Pavane is a powerful tale of love, jealousy, and deceit. Performed to the stately music of Henry Purcell, this one act piece eloquently distills the passion and dramatic arc of Shakespeares Othello. Originally premiering in 1949, Limóns masterpiece has been preserved and passed on from generation to generation through its dancers. MDT is proud to work closely with reconstructor Jennifer Scanlon, former principal dancer and associate artistic director of the Limón Dance Company, to bring this hauntingly beautiful piece to life for Minnesota audiences to experience.
As Limón impacted the world of modern dance, Loyce Houlton impacted the artistic landscape of Minnesota and beyond with her influential and forward-thinking work. To broaden the knowledge of her impact and enable audiences to experience her renowned work firsthand, MDTs acclaimed dancers will showcase the depth and range of her choreography in a collection of rare and beloved excerpts for which her legacy was built.
The evening will also feature the world premiere of Point of Reference, Lise Houltons follow up to Point of Departure (2008) which highlighted the companys daring approach to motion. The second installment continues with robust energy and style, and inquisitive dancers playing with indicators that reveal a course.
