MPRB Celebrates Renovations at the Theodore Wirth Picnic Pavilion

It was a beautiful fall afternoon on Sunday, October 27, as nearly 100 people joined the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), MPRB commissioners and other public officials for the grand opening of the newly renovated Theodore Wirth Picnic Pavilion.

One of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Boards (MPRB) historic treasures, the pavilion underwent renovations beginning during winter 2012-3, including new restrooms, an updated teaching kitchen, restored interior/exterior finishes, and new wiring and HVAC systems making this a year-round programming and rental facility.

The grand opening featured comments by MPRB Commissioner Anita Tabb, MPRB Commissioner Jon Olson, Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels, Hennepin County Commissioner Linda Higgins and Minnesota State Senator Bobby Joe Champion, a ribbon cutting, inside activities for families including face painting, a tattoo artist, pumpkin painting, and delicious fall refreshments. Naturalists also led hikes around the property so families could explore and enjoy the fall weather.

MPRB recognizes and thanks the Metropolitan Council and the State of Minnesota for support of this project, as well as the extensive community engagement by the Citizen Advisory Committee who worked on the concept master plan of the park and prioritized refurbishing these existing facilities.

The renovated Theodore Wirth Picnic Pavilion can be used for a wide variety of events such as, but not limited to, family gatherings, reunions, weddings, meetings, retreats, and birthday celebrations. The pavilion has all day, half-day and evening rental availabilities year-round.
