Minneapolis Named Among Greenest Cities in the Nation
NerdWallet considers environmental quality and green transportation trends
San Francisco, CA (April 21, 2014) NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy website, recently conducted a study to find the greenest cities in America and Minneapolis is in the top 10.
For Earth Day 2014, NerdWallet wanted to shed light on the places in the U.S. with the highest levels of green living. NerdWallet determined the greenest cities in the country based on the following variables:
- Median Air Quality Index
- Parks per 10,000 residents
- Gallons of excess fuel consumed per commuter
- Percentage of people who work from home, or walk, bike, carpool or take public transportation to work
NerdWallet determined that Minneapolis is the 10th greenest city in the nation. The city has 4.7 parks per 10,000 residents and a median Air Quality Index of 45, meaning that air pollution poses little or no risk there. Minneapolis is also home to green-minded commuters: 37.4% of the citys residents either work from home, or walk, bike, carpool, or take public transit to work.
Minneapolis is a great place for people who care about green living, said NerdWallet analyst Sreekar Jasthi. The city has 92 miles of on-street bikeways and 85 miles of off-street paths for residents to utilize. Minneapolis is also home to several green-minded groups such as the Minnesota Renewable Energy Society.
Some of the other greenest cities in the nation include Anchorage, Alaska; Greensboro, N.C.; and Cincinnati, Ohio. Read the full study online.
