Google Maps for Android creates an interactive indoor mobile map for Mall of America®
BLOOMINGTON, Minn., (Nov. 29, 2011) Mall of America is among the first wave of venues to partner with Google to bring Android users indoor places on Google Maps. Starting today, when a user accesses Google Maps on their Android device and zooms in to Mall of America, a detailed floor plan will appear on the map. Users can then browse floor plans and use the Google Maps My Location feature, to see their detailed location inside the Mall, represented via the familiar blue dot icon. A tool on the right hand side of the screen will also show the user which floor they are on, and automatically update the floor plan and labeled points of interest (such as stores and restaurants) when the user goes up or down a level.
With 4.3 miles of store front footage, Mall of America can be tricky to navigate, said Maureen Bausch, executive vice president at Mall of America. Adding Google Maps Indoor to our guest experience tool kit allows guests the ability to view and interact with our space in a new way.
Shoppers can now use Google Maps for Android to more quickly and effortlessly figure out where they are and whats around them when theyre indoors, said Steve Lee, director of product management at Google. Were thrilled to work with Mall of America to improve peoples shopping experience and help them determine various places within the mall they might want to go be it a specific retail store, or just a restroom or ATM.
These indoor maps are part of Google Maps 6.0 for Android-powered devices and are available whenever a user has a cellular connection. A one-time update of the Google Maps application is required on a users mobile device in order to see these maps, but no further updates are needed to view new or updated indoor maps. Users can update the app by visiting the Google Maps entry in Android Market on their phones or desktop.
