FIRST AVENUE WEEKLY PRESS RELEASE: ZZ Ward, Lauv, Tune-Yards, and more
ZZ Ward returns to Minneapolis and the First Avenue Mainroom in support of her second full-length release, The Storm, released June 2017. “For me, this album wasn’t really about experimenting,” Ward admits. “It was more about simplicity, honing in on what I love about music and what makes me who I am as an artist.” See ZZ Ward at First Avenue on Thursday, February 8, 2018.
Lauv has a huge year ahead, with opening gigs scheduled for Ed Sheeran’s Asian Tour, to his own headlining world tour, “I Met You When I Was 18.” with special guest Jeremy Zucker. Catch him in the 7th St Entry on Saturday, February 17, 2018.
Tune-Yards just announced a new album, and shared the new song “Look at Your Hands.” Also announced is their 2018 tour, with a stop at First Avenue on Friday, March 2, 2018.
Tickets for these shows and more are on sale this Friday, October 27.
This week’s featured event:
In Pitchfork’s definitive “Best Songs of the 80s” list, Evan Rytlewski writes on the significance of Dinosaur Jr.’s “Freak Scene”:
In Our Band Could Be Your Life, author Michael Azerrad memorably details an encounter between Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis and Lou Barlow, the bassist he'd booted from the band. Nevermind had just shot up the charts, establishing Nirvana as mega-stars, and Barlow was beyond bitter. "They fucking beat you to it!" he fumed. "You could have done it, you asshole, we could have fucking done it!" Only years later did Barlow realize that Dinosaur never could have matched Nirvana's commercial appeal, but it's not a stretch to imagine them coming close. Under different circumstances, any number of underground singles could have broken before "Smells Like Teen Spirit", becoming the generational anthem that announced punk’s seize of the mainstream. "Freak Scene" was perhaps the strongest candidate among them.
Head over to St. Paul for a gig at the Palace Theatre this Thursday, October 26. Expect a seriously loud show, and lots (lots) of guitar. Tickets are on sale now.
