City celebrates construction kick off for Peavey Plaza revitalization project
WHAT: City and community leaders will celebrate the start of construction on the Peavey Plaza revitalization project. Once complete, the plaza on Nicollet Mall will be more accessible, have its historic features restored and be a more inviting destination in the heart of downtown Minneapolis.
WHEN: 1 p.m. Monday, May 14
WHERE: Peavey Plaza, 11th Street & Nicollet Mall
MORE: Mayor Jacob Frey, City Council Member Lisa Goodman (Ward 7) and David Wilson, board chair of Green Minneapolis, are scheduled to speak at the construction kick off. Built in 1974, the plaza was designed by landscape architect M. Paul Friedberg and has been considered an icon of modernist architecture. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in January 2012.
Project highlights include restoring the plaza’s fountains and water features, renovating the hardscape and landscaping, updating lighting and making design improvements to ensure the plaza is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Construction is scheduled to be completed by May 2019 with a re-opening planned for summer 2019. Visit the project page on the City’s website for more information.
