MINNEAPOLIS - Minneapolis Musical Theatres (MMT) Carrie The Musical, based on Stephen Kings best-selling novel about a misfit with special powers, makes its Twin Cities debut October 4-27, 2013 at Hennepin Theatre Trusts New Century Theatre (Street Level of City Center in downtown Minneapolis). MMTs artistic director Steven Meerdink, directs this newly adapted production which kicks off its second season partnership with Hennepin Theatre Trust. Tickets are on sale now. For tickets or more information, visit HennepinTheatreTrust.org or call 1.800.982.2787 or in person at the New Century Box Office.
Carrie The Musical tells the tale of Carrie White, an outcast at school bullied by the popular crowd and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, shes at the mercy of her loving, but cruelly overprotective mother. But Carries just discovered she has a special power and if pushed too far, shes not afraid to use it.
The show first opened on Broadway in 1988 and its original authors have joined director Stafford Arima and Manhattan Class Company to produce this fully reimagined gripping version of the book by Lawrence D. Cohen (screenwriter of the classic 1976 film). With music by Academy Award winner Michael Gore (Fame, Terms of Endearment) and lyrics by Academy Award winner Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose), Time Magazine says this score does what a musical score should do: it moves the show along, illuminates the characters and deepens the emotions.
Local actress Jill Iverson stars as Carrie White who appeared in Launcelot and Guenever at this years Minnesota Fringe Festival. Lori Maxwell, who appeared in MMTs The Great American Trailer Park Musical, plays the oppressive religious mother, Margaret White. Also featured are Amanda Weis as Miss Gardner, Ryan Halliday as Mr. Stephens, Natalie Schleusner as Sue Snell, Rebecca Gebhart as Chris Hargensen, Philip Matthews as Tommy Ross and Logan Greene as Billy Nolan. The ensemble includes Tyler Davis, Alice McGlave, Matthew Flint, Eli Newell, Emilie LaBonte and Loretta Miller. Directed by Steven Meerdink, Carrie features musical direction by Matthew Bear, scenic design by Darren Hensel, video/image design by Christian Unser, lighting design by Grant Merges, sound design by Allen Weeks, costume design by Cindy Freet and prop design by Joe Hendren.
MMT and the Hennepin Theatre Trust begin their second season of this unique partnership strengthening both organizations by combining resources in artistic exploration and audience development to present new, or rarely-seen, musical works. Upcoming productions include Five Course Love and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.
