Alpine features the dual vocals of frontwomen Phoebe Baker and Lou James, Christian OBrien on guitar, Ryan Lamb on bass, Tim Royall on keys and Phil Tucker on drums. This Australian 6-piece make bold, twinkling, sexy and sophisticated pop music. Fusing synths with honeyed harmonies, hypnotic rhythms and bright beats. Alpine appeared on the scene in 2009 with a set of demos that quickly caught the attention of music lovers across Australia. After signing with Sydney's Ivy League Records, 2010 saw the release of their debut EP Zurich as well as tours alongside the likes of Sia, Cloud Control, The Naked and Famous, Jinja Safari and Tim and Jean.
In 2011 the band toured with Sparkadia, The Jezabels and graced festivals across the country including Splendour In The Grass, Southbound and Falls Festival. 2012 proved yet another eventful year for Alpine, including performing 10 shows in 3 days at SXSW in Austin, Texas. After performing at SXSW in March 2012 as relative unknowns, Alpine have since scored a record deal with Votiv (USA), which will see their debut album released in the first half of 2013. Back in Australia, the band supported Matt Corby on his The Winter national tour, sold out their own National album tour and were main support for Lisa Mitchell's 'Bless this Mess' album tour. Their Villages clip also passed the 1 million YouTube views milestone, sparking further international interest.
In August 2012 Alpine released 'A is For Alpine', the bold, twinkling, and artistic debut album for Melbournes Alpine. With traverse diverse themes, ideas and sounds on the album, it's assured, yet never quite taken too seriously. A week before it's release, 'A is For Alpine' was Triple J's feature album, with 9 tracks previewed from the album nationally over the week. It was highly acclaimed by the radio station as "There's a giddy happiness to the Melbourne band's stellar album...A collection of vibrant songs, full of colourful harmonies and inventive melodies." Recorded out of Melbourne in the gentle bush surrounds of rural Gisborne, with producer Dann Hume (Lisa Mitchell and Sures), it has already spawned three glorious singles including the tremendously successful HANDS and iridescent single GASOLINE, and new single SEEING RED, both of which were mixed by UKs Jeremy Wheatley (U2, Empire of the Sun, Goldfrapp).
A Is For Alpine is, according to co-front-woman Pheobe Baker, a document of the bands innocent and not so innocent explorations through our early-twenty-something emotions. Its an introduction to us, Ryan Lamb goes on to say. We wanted to represent the different sides of our music, so theres some sad moments, some dancey moments, some rocking out, and lots of harmonies. I think its a much more fun record than people will expect.
On the day of its release, the album debuted at #1 on the Australian iTunes charts and it landed them a nomination for 'breakthrough artist' at the 2012 ARIAS. In addition, their critically acclaimed debut album A is for Alpine was recently voted Australian Album of the Year by influential The Age Newspaper, ahead of new albums by Tame Impala and The Presets, and joining previous winners such as Nick Cave and Silverchair. In 2013, Alpine will be performing nationally at Australia's most insurgent and unique pop music event St.Jeromes Laneway Festival (Bat for Lashes, Alt-J, Ms Mr, Of Monsters and Men).
Alpine returned to the USA in March to perform their own headline shows in LA, New York and SXSW. A month later in April, Alpine performed back home in Australia at the National/Regional festival 'Groovin The Moo' along side the likes of Tame Impala, Flume, Tegan and Sara and Frightened Rabbit) as well as main support for Temper Trap's Melbourne and Sydney sideshows. In June the band once again retuned to the USA to embark on their first North American tour supporting Crystal Fighters, performing a tiny desk session at NPR as well as a one off show supporting Grouplove in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
Most recently, Alpine performed to their biggest crowd to date at Australia's most famous Splendour in the Grass Festival (Empire of the Sun, The National, James Blake).
