2011 WNBA Champions Lynx to Pick Third in 2012 WNBA Draft
Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn. (Nov. 10, 2011) The 2011 WNBA Champion Minnesota Lynx will select third overall in the 2012 WNBA Draft as determined today by the 11th annual WNBA Draft Lottery. Los Angeles, which came into today with a 10.4% chance of winning the Draft Lottery, will pick first, followed by Chicago, Minnesota and Tulsa. Minnesota used the combinations from Washingtons first round pick (originally slotted second overall), acquired back on April 9, 2011 in exchange for Nicky Anosike, to secure the third overall selection. Minnesota came in with a 27.6% chance of winning todays Draft Lottery.
Minnesota entered todays Draft Lottery with Washingtons selection as well as its own first round pick (12th overall), courtesy of the teams league-best 27-7 2011 regular season record. In addition to two first round choices, the Lynx also own three picks in the second round (Nos. 19, 20 and 24) and the No. 31 overall selection (third round).
The Lynx have selected third once before in franchise history, drafting Candice Wiggins (2008), who went on to average 15.7 points her rookie year en route to earning the league's Sixth Player of the Year award. Minnesota owned the third pick in 2010 before trading it to Connecticut in exchange for the Suns 2011 first and second round selections.
Notable No. 3 choices include 2011 WNBA Most Valuable Player Tamika Catchings (2001, Indiana) and WNBA All-Stars Nicole Powell (2004, Charlotte) and Cheryl Ford (2003, Detroit).
Lynx season tickets for the 2012 WNBA campaign, which will begin in May, are available for as low as $153 and can be purchased by calling 612-673-8400 or by visiting www.lynxbasketball.com.
