The Meetings Industry Will Be More Sophisticated When the Next Backlash Comes

The Minneapolis hotel market has made steady gains since the low water mark of 59% occupancy in 2009. That's the same year the meetings industry began to mobilize and make intentional plans to mitigate the impact of the next recession. It's not a matter of if another recession will occur. Instead it's a matter of when and how severe it will be.

That response came in the form of an initiative known as Meetings Mean Business, an industry-wide coalition to showcase the undeniable value that business meetings, trade shows, incentive travel, exhibitions, conferences and conventions bring to people, businesses and communities.

The new co chair of Meetings Mean Business is Paul Van Deventer, the president & CEO of Meetings Professionals International (MPI). You may recall that Minnneapolis hosted MPI's World Education Congress in 2014. Paul was interviewed recently by Skift regarding his plans for expanding Meetings Mean Business. Skift was founded by Rafat Ali in 2012 as a travel industry business intelligence platform.
